Online surveys – what are they?

Online surveying is typically quantitative research conducted via the Internet using dedicated software / web pages which the respondent logs onto in order to conduct the survey.

Advantages

The primary advantages of online surveys are the lower overall costs, the high scalability, the wide reach (you only need an internet connection to complete them), the potential ease of completion and speed. The results of online surveys can be tabulated in near real time, therefore the turnaround time of such surveys – depending on the respondents is low.

Online surveys can also be accompanied by visual and audio aids if needed. Additionally, for some groups, usually the younger segments, online surveys are the preferred form of media for completing surveys.

Disadvantages

Unless steps are taken otherwise, it is often hard to guarantee that the respondents are the actual intended audience (as generally these surveys are anonymous). Being a mostly quantitative research methodology there is little opportunity to probe respondents for further information and clarification on their opinions. Further, depending on the intended audience, open-ended responses in online surveys are often left blank, or a default option of “don’t know” often chosen. This can be mitigated by survey design and audience selection. Additionally, if the audience is not pre-prepared for the survey, and the online survey comes from an unknown third party, response rates can be very low.
